Johnson C. Smith University, also known as JCSU, is a four-year, independent, co-educational, liberal-arts college, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the United States. It was established in 1867 and was named in order to honor the generous benefactions of Mrs. Jane Berry and Johnson Crayne Smith, of Pittsburgh, PA, who gave funds to build a theological dormitory, a science hall, a teachers' cottage and a memorial gate. Today, the institution awards Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Social Work degrees.
Johnson C. Smith University is recognized by U.S. News and World Report as being one of the Best Comprehensive Colleges in the South.
JCSU's athletic teams are called The Golden Bulls, and they compete in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and NCAA Division II, in several sports, for both men and women. Their official colors are gold and royal blue. Johnson C. Smith University played in and won the first black college football game in America against Livingstone College on December 27, 1892, and in 2001, the men's basketball team won the CIAA Basketball Tournament.
The Johnson C. Smith University has produced thousands of alumni, many of them being appointed notable alumni, such as: John H. Adams - he was a pastor at Seattle’s First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) Church from 1962 to 1968 and a leader in the city’s civil rights struggle, Frederick C. Branch - first African American officer in the United States Marine Corps, Chet Grimsley - recognized as the first Euro-American to garner accolades as All-CIAA and All-American at JCSU and at an HBCU, author of `White Golden Bull`, among other.
